I took a half-day Korean-language tour with guide Kim Geonwoo, together with my mother and her best friend, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Geonwoo is energetic, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable. From the very first stop, he made our group feel relaxed and welcome. His warmth and humor made a group of strangers feel like friends traveling together, and that easy atmosphere made everyone comfortable asking questions, laughing, and fully enjoying the day. English is my first language and Korean my second, but I understood and enjoyed every part of the tour. He explained history, Gaudí's work and influence, and stories from his own life in a way that was easy to follow and fun to listen to.
We visited Casa Batlló (inside and out), Casa Milà, Park Güell, and the Sagrada Família, and his knowledge of each place was impressive. What sets him apart is how he ties every stop together through Gaudí's life and vision. Instead of a list of disconnected facts, you follow one storyline, and each building feels like the next chapter.
As we got close to Park Güell, a torrential downpour hit. Geonwoo's energy never dropped. He turned down an umbrella so he could keep holding his mic and be heard clearly, and so he could keep showing us the materials he had prepared on his tablet. He has a whole library of photos he uses to point out details, compare then and now, and show areas that are closed off, rebuilt, or lost to time. It added a whole extra layer to the experience.
Two days earlier, I had taken a "Golden Hour Tour" of the Sagrada Família. That tour covered only the basilica, but Geonwoo's time there went much deeper. He pointed out details and explained meanings the other tour never touched. He also took us to a hidden photo spot and made sure every group got pictures they were happy with.
Geonwoo is a natural leader, and it shows in how smoothly he runs such an ambitious tour. When plans had to change, like when the rain rolled in, he adjusted calmly without losing time or taking anything away from the experience. Our group was made up of several smaller parties, each with its own pace, interests, and questions, and he handled every one of them with grace and patience. He kept asking if we had questions or feedback, even about how he took photos or explained things. He was caring and looked out for everyone the whole time, and he never rushed us or skipped over a room, building, detail, or story. Somehow he did all of this and still kept the tour right on schedule.
If you're visiting Barcelona, book a tour with Geonwoo. You'll leave with photos, but also with a real understanding of Gaudí and the city. My mom, her best friend, and I are still talking about it. Geonwoo, thank you. I hope our paths cross again so I can hear more of your stories!
